Situated on a site of natural cave systems and a spring-fed stream, the settlement grew from forty-three original inhabitants to a peak population of approximately eighty, sustained by agriculture, trade, and a melanistic leopard breeding programme. Andhakara was abandoned on 4 June 1222 BCE, sixty-five years after its founding, following the death of its last Guardian.
