Approaching Zero
Claire returns to the outback at dawn and searches in widening spirals — the property, the mine shafts, the scrub, the ruins — her voice growing hoarse, her hands bleeding, the landscape yielding nothing but animal tracks and silence. By mid-morning the mathematics are inescapable: she cannot find two children alone in a landscape measured in thousands of square kilometres. But asking for help means explaining things she cannot explain. What follows is a transformation that begins with a nail brush and ends with a woman she doesn't recognise driving toward the police station.
