Under the Castle's Watch
Edinburgh Castle has watched over gatherings for centuries—markets, processions, celebrations. It knows how to keep secrets. Below its walls, the Campbells prepare to reveal theirs, or at least the parts safe for public consumption. Maeve's decorations transform their booth into something almost otherworldly. Nathan positions himself where he can see everyone who lingers too long. The gates haven't opened yet, but already the air carries the particular tension of things about to become visible.
Canvas awnings snap in the spring breeze. The scent of fresh bread mingles with artisan cheese, local honey, and everywhere the rich perfume of coffee. Edinburgh Castle watches from above, ancient stones bearing witness to another gathering in its shadow.
The Campbells work with choreographed precision. Isla takes command of products and inventory, her clipboard an extension of herself. Maeve weaves vines around the booth's framework, transforming metal scaffolding into something almost otherworldly—a secret garden that happens to serve exceptional coffee. Rowan arranges plants with intuitive understanding, her copper curls already escaping their pins.
Nathan and Kelly move through their tasks with different kinds of efficiency. Kelly's hands know exactly what's needed and when. Nathan's eyes map the festival grounds—exits, crowd patterns, security positions—whilst appearing to simply admire the historic setting.
A group of early workers wander past, their observation too sharp for casual interest. "Very... distinctive," one comments, the emphasis carrying weight.
Daniel watches his family take their positions. Twenty years of building the Leaf & Bean have led to this moment.
The castle bells ring. The barriers lift. The crowds flow in.
Here we go.
