The Distance Between Dust and Hope
A doctor steps into a world she's only heard stories about. A brother waits with news he'd rather not deliver. And a man who brought them all together is about to learn whether his desperate plan was worth the cost. Three perspectives. One destination. The tent isn't far—but what waits inside will determine whether any of this mattered at all.
Luke seals the Portal and watches Glenda take in Clivilius for the first time. She's searching for something—the world Gebhardt described, perhaps, or proof that his stories were more than fables. What she finds is dust and silence. Luke doesn't have time to let her adjust.
Paul meets them at the Drop Zone. Introductions are made—names, handshakes, the word doctor landing like a promise. Glenda crouches to examine Paul's burnt foot, but Luke cuts in. There's someone else. Someone worse.
Jamie was better at lunch. Now he isn't. Paul delivers the update, and Luke feels the ground shift beneath him. Everything he's done today—the groceries, the bank, the recruitment—narrows to a single point: the tent where Jamie lies.
Glenda doesn't hesitate. Take me to him. Now. The command is clean, professional. She's done this before—walked toward crisis, stepped into chaos, become the calm that others need. Clivilius may be strange, but the work is familiar.
Three people. Three journeys. One canvas shelter waiting at the end of a walk that feels longer than it should.
