SILVERTON — Police are growing increasingly concerned for the welfare of Sally Louise Harlow, a 31-year-old historian and explorer who disappeared five days ago while conducting research into historical disappearances in the region.
Miss Harlow, originally from Newcastle, was last seen on the evening of Tuesday, 13 September, leaving the Silverton Hotel after speaking with several locals about the town's mining history. She told witnesses she intended to return to "an old site" she had discovered during her research.
She has not been seen since.
Yesterday afternoon, police searching the area discovered Miss Harlow's personal belongings approximately three kilometres from Silverton, near the remains of an abandoned mining shack. Items recovered included a leather satchel containing research notes, a journal, camera equipment, and clothing.
There was no sign of Miss Harlow herself.
Sergeant Barry Glasson of Broken Hill Police, who is coordinating the search effort, described the discovery as "deeply concerning."
"Miss Harlow's belongings appear to have been left in a hurry, or possibly abandoned under duress," Sgt Glasson said. "We are treating this as a missing persons case with suspicious circumstances and are appealing for anyone who may have seen Miss Harlow since Tuesday evening to contact police immediately."
Miss Harlow arrived in Silverton in late August and had been staying at the Silverton Hotel whilst conducting research into historical disappearances and abandoned mining operations in the region. Hotel staff described her as friendly, enthusiastic, and deeply committed to her work.
"She was here every evening, asking questions about the old days," said publican Graham Fletcher. "She was particularly interested in cases where people had vanished without explanation—miners, prospectors, travellers. She said there were patterns nobody had noticed."
Mr Fletcher said Miss Harlow had become increasingly excited in the days before her disappearance, suggesting she had uncovered something significant.
"On Tuesday, she came in around five o'clock looking like she'd found gold," Mr Fletcher recalled. "Said she needed to check something before she could be certain. That was the last any of us saw her."
Miss Harlow's mother, Brenda Harlow of Newcastle, reported her daughter missing on Thursday, 15 September, after failing to receive their scheduled telephone call. Mrs Harlow had travelled to Broken Hill and is assisting police with inquiries.
"Sally rings me every second day without fail," Mrs Harlow said in a brief statement. "When I didn't hear from her, I knew something was wrong. My daughter is experienced in the bush. She wouldn't simply wander off."
Police have organised search parties covering the area between Silverton and the abandoned mining shack where Miss Harlow's belongings were found. Local volunteers have joined the effort, though the vast and unforgiving terrain presents significant challenges.
"The country out here doesn't forgive mistakes," Sgt Glasson said. "Every hour that passes is critical. We're asking anyone—locals, visitors, anyone travelling through the area last week—to think carefully about whether they saw anything unusual."
Miss Harlow is described as approximately 165 centimetres tall with shoulder-length brown hair and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing khaki trousers, a white cotton shirt, and brown leather boots. She typically carried a canvas backpack and was known to wear a wide-brimmed hat.
The disappearance has unsettled the small Silverton community, which numbers fewer than sixty permanent residents. Several locals expressed concern that Miss Harlow's research into historical disappearances may have led her into danger.
"She was asking about things people don't like to talk about," said one resident who declined to be named. "Old stories. Dark stories. Maybe she found something someone wanted to stay buried."
Sgt Glasson declined to comment on whether Miss Harlow's research may be connected to her disappearance, stating only that police were "pursuing all lines of inquiry."
The case has drawn attention to a troubling pattern of disappearances in the region. In March of this year, 28-year-old Jennifer Hartley vanished without trace near Menindee. Her case remains unsolved. Police have not confirmed whether they believe the cases may be connected.
"We are aware of historical incidents and are reviewing all relevant information," Sgt Glasson said. "However, our immediate priority is locating Miss Harlow. Every resource available is being directed toward that goal."
Anyone with information regarding Miss Harlow's whereabouts or movements since 13 September is urged to contact Broken Hill Police Station or Crime Stoppers.
