Then, with the workroom nearly empty and Elspeth Stewart still present, she slips a folded paper into a concealed pocket sewn into the bodice lining — a list of names and figures destined for Countess Ruthven's hands, documenting which members of the Scottish Parliament have accepted payments from the Lord Advocate's office in exchange for intelligence on Jacobite sympathisers. On a grey October morning, twenty-four-year-old Nathaniel Blackwood walks from the rectory of St Thomas's Church to begin his first day as curate of the parish where he was born. The streets he knew as a shipwright's son look different when they belong to him. The churchwardens are waiting. The vestry smells of damp plaster and old sermons. And the iron key that unlocks the side door weighs more in his hand than anything he carried out of Oxford.

Henry Coward opens the vestry ledger and begins the calculations that will determine who receives help and who does not.

The new curate of St Thomas's administers last rites for the first time in his ministry — not in the dignified setting he had imagined, but in a room that smells of sweat and urine and tallow, with a father too weak to stand and a mother too exhausted to weep.

On the twenty-eighth of January, in a room on Oyster Street, a dying dockyard carpenter named Peter Aldridge refuses the curate's prayers with a fury that strips bare the question Nathaniel has been avoiding since the first body was lowered into St Thomas's churchyard.

Agnes Moody has lived in Portsmouth for eighty-one years. She survived the fever of 1740, buried two husbands and five of her eight children, and has not set foot inside St Thomas's Church in over a decade. Now she lies dying in a room on Butcher Row, attended by a granddaughter who cannot afford a physician and a curate whose faith broke ten days ago in a carpenter's lodgings on Oyster Street. What happens in the final hours of Agnes Moody's life will not appear in any parish register. It does not belong to the categories that registers are designed to contain.

Fourteen-year-old Constance, the eldest daughter, delivers the baby alone — a girl, born with the cord wrapped twice around her neck, in a birth complicated by haemorrhage that nearly claims the mother's life. The child is named Eleanor. Her eyes are blue.

In a ceremony held at Chewbathia's parade ground, twelve men step forward to become something that has never existed before. They are volunteers — soldiers from the Regular Garrison, settlers with hunting experience, men whose qualities Elspeth Stewart and Captain MacTavish have observed and assessed over years of shared hardship. They do not yet know what they will become. They know only that New Edinburgh needs warriors who can fight in darkness, and that they have been chosen to learn how.

Five months of training have transformed the First Twelve into something closer to what Elspeth and MacTavish envisioned. Tonight, that transformation faces its first true test. A shadow panther — a lone male, separated from its pack — has been hunting in the hills north of Chewbathia. The Hunters will track it, engage it, and learn what their training is truly worth. Two of them will not return alive.

Their lessons will not be forgotten.

Hunter scouts have been tracking unusual movement for three days — a force larger than any they have seen, approaching from the southeast along routes that suggest military organisation rather than merchant travel. This morning, as dawn reveals the scale of what approaches, the truth becomes undeniable. Theopolis has sent an army. New Edinburgh has perhaps twelve hours to prepare for an assault that outnumbers its defenders more than ten to one.

The Theopolitan army arrives as the last light fades from the sky — two thousand men in bronze armour, their discipline evident in the precision of their formation. Strategos Nikandros expects a siege of days, perhaps weeks, wearing down the barbarian defenders until submission becomes inevitable. What he does not expect is an enemy that refuses to stand and fight, that strikes from shadows and vanishes before retaliation, that transforms the approach to Chewbathia into a killing ground where Greek formations cannot form and Greek discipline cannot tell.

Eighty-Seven Before Dawn

The Theopolitan camp has settled into the uneasy rest of soldiers awaiting battle. The Scottish harassment has ceased, the darkness is quiet, and Strategos Nikandros believes the worst is behind them until morning. He is wrong. Four shadow panthers have been stalking the Theopolitan column since it entered their territory. Now, with the army stationary and the defenders' attention divided, the pack moves to attack. The Theopolitans have never faced anything like what comes for them from the darkness beyond their torchlight.
