Mrs Harrington, the housekeeper, if Broadmoor recalled correctly from his earlier visits. Her eyes tracked the men moving through the garden beds with an expression that suggested she was witnessing something akin to desecration — the careful work of months being undone in hours.

"And yet the small things often matter more than we expect," Broadmoor finished for her. "Tell me, Mrs Harrington — has Mr Jeffries been spending time in the gardens recently? Any particular spots he favoured?"
Something flickered across the housekeeper's face — a shadow of hesitation quickly suppressed. Her hands, which had been clasped before her in the approved manner of household service, moved to the ring of keys at her waist, fingers working at the metal with unconscious agitation.
"He's been fond of the rose arbour of late, Constable. Said the scent helped him think." She paused, then added in a lower voice, as though the words escaped against her better judgment, "He's been needing a good deal of thinking time recently, if you take my meaning."
Broadmoor tilted his head slightly, studying her expression. Lines of long service had etched themselves around her eyes and mouth, the particular marks of a woman who had spent decades managing the complexities of household life. But there was something else present now — a shadow that spoke of secrets carried and loyalties tested.
"And why do you think that might be, Mrs Harrington?"
"It's not my place to speculate, sir," she replied, but even as she spoke the words, her gaze drifted upward to the manor's upper windows. Following her look, Broadmoor caught the silhouette of Victoria Ashford at one of the tall panes, watching the proceedings below with an attention that seemed to miss nothing.
Before he could press further, a shout rang out from the far corner of the garden. "Constable! Over here!"
Broadmoor moved swiftly across the grounds, his boots crunching against gravel and then sinking into the softer earth of the garden beds. Mrs Harrington followed in his wake, her pace suggesting she already suspected what had been found — or feared it.
Young Rogers, one of his deputies, stood beside a stone bench partially concealed by a towering hedge of camellias. The morning's frost had long since melted, leaving the bench's surface dark with moisture, its pale stone gleaming dully in the afternoon light. The spot was secluded, invisible from the main paths — a place where one might sit in privacy, away from the eyes of the household.
"What have you found?" Broadmoor asked, already reaching for his notebook.
Rogers pointed to the ground before the bench, his young face pale with the weight of discovery. "Boot prints, sir. Fresh ones, by the look of them. And..." He hesitated, casting a glance toward Mrs Harrington before continuing. "There's blood on the stones here. Just a few drops, but unmistakable."
Broadmoor knelt to examine the evidence, his knees pressing into damp earth that soaked through his trousers with cold indifference. The boot prints were clear in the soft soil — a man's, the pattern speaking of expensive construction and recent wear. London-made, if he was any judge of such things, the kind of footwear that would cost a working man several months' wages.
Beside the clear prints, barely visible in the disturbed ground, were other marks that told a more troubling story. Scuffed earth. Drag marks. The impression of a knee pressed hard into the soil. Signs that suggested not a peaceful moment of contemplation but something far more violent.

Behind him, Mrs Harrington's sharp intake of breath cut through the garden's stillness. Broadmoor turned to find the housekeeper gone pale as winter sky, her hands clutching her keys so tightly that her knuckles had whitened to the colour of bone.
"That's... that's where I found the letter," she whispered, then immediately pressed her lips together as though regretting the words the moment they escaped.
Broadmoor rose to his full height, his blue eyes fixing upon the housekeeper with an intensity that made her take an involuntary step backward. "What letter? This is the first I'm hearing of any letter, Mrs Harrington."
The woman's gaze darted toward the house again, toward that window where Miss Ashford's shadow still lingered. Whatever internal struggle played across her features resolved itself into something like resignation — the expression of one who has carried a burden too long and finds relief in finally setting it down.
"I found it here, sir. Yesterday morning, when I was doing my inspection of the grounds. Tucked beneath the bench, as though it had been dropped or hidden." Her voice had dropped to barely more than a whisper, though no one stood close enough to overhear. "I gave it to Mrs Jeffries immediately, of course. It upset her greatly, though she tried not to show it."
Broadmoor made a careful note in his book, the scratch of pencil against paper loud in the sudden quiet. Around them, the searchers had paused in their work, drawn by the commotion though too distant to hear the actual words being exchanged. He was acutely aware of their attention, of the way information would spread through the search party and beyond before the day was out.
"And did you happen to see what was written in this letter?" he asked, keeping his voice low.
"Oh no, sir," Mrs Harrington replied quickly — too quickly, perhaps, her denial carrying the particular quality of one who protests too much. "It wouldn't be proper to read the mistress's correspondence."
But something in her tone suggested otherwise, and Broadmoor filed away the inconsistency for later examination. Servants in great houses saw more than their employers ever suspected — read letters left carelessly upon desks, overheard conversations through doors not quite closed, pieced together the truth of their masters' lives from a thousand small observations. Mrs Harrington had served in such houses for decades. The odds that she had resisted the temptation to glimpse even a few words of that letter seemed vanishingly small.
A chill wind stirred the garden, sending dried leaves skittering across the gravel paths with a sound like whispered secrets. The camellia hedge rustled, releasing a shower of withered leaves that drifted down upon the bloodstained stones — nature's own attempt, perhaps, to conceal the evidence of whatever violence had occurred here.
"Rogers," Broadmoor called to his deputy, "find Philip Pyke. I want him to examine these boot prints before we lose the light. And mark this area carefully — nothing is to be disturbed until I've had the chance for a thorough examination."
The young man hurried away on his errand, and Broadmoor turned his attention back to the housekeeper. Mrs Harrington had recovered some of her composure, though her colour remained poor and her hands continued their nervous work upon the ring of keys.
"Now then," he said, his tone carrying the weight of official authority, "what else haven't you told me about recent events in these gardens? Or elsewhere on the estate?"
The housekeeper's fingers stilled. For a long moment she seemed to wrestle with herself, duty and discretion battling against the evident desire to unburden herself of knowledge that had grown too heavy to carry alone.
"There have been... visitors, sir," she said at last, her voice barely audible above the whisper of wind through the camellia leaves. "At odd hours. Men I didn't recognise, speaking with the master in whispers." She glanced around as though expecting to be overheard, though the nearest searcher stood a good twenty yards distant. "And there was that business with Inspector Barwick..."
"What business was that?" Broadmoor pressed, but before Mrs Harrington could respond, a new voice cut through the garden's heavy air.
"Mrs Harrington." Victoria Ashford had appeared on the gravel path as though materialising from the winter shadows themselves. Her approach had been silent, her presence announced only when she chose to make it known. "I believe Mrs Jeffries requires your assistance with young William. The child is asking for his father again, and his nanny seems unable to settle him."
The housekeeper's relief at this interruption was palpable. "If you'll excuse me, Constable," she murmured, already turning toward the house. "Duty calls."
Broadmoor watched her hurry away, noting how her pace quickened the moment she thought herself unobserved, her black skirts sweeping across the gravel with the urgency of escape. Miss Ashford's eyes followed the housekeeper's retreat with an attention that seemed to catalogue every detail of the woman's manner — the haste, the relief, the way she did not look back.
When Mrs Harrington had disappeared through the manor's rear entrance, Victoria turned her sharp hazel gaze upon Broadmoor himself. The afternoon light caught the silver threading of her riding habit, making it gleam like armour, and her expression carried the particular blend of concern and calculation that he was beginning to recognise as characteristic.

"Perhaps," he replied carefully, matching her measured tone. "Though it seems everyone at Jeffries Manor has a different story to tell. Or rather, different portions of the same story, carefully divided amongst them." He met her gaze with the steadiness of one who had faced worse than sharp-tongued colonial ladies. "Would you care to add your portion, Miss Ashford?"
Victoria's lips curved into a smile that held no warmth whatsoever. "My portion, as you put it, Constable, is simply that of a concerned friend." She gestured toward the bloodstained stones with a gloved hand, her movement graceful despite its subject. "Though I must say, this development is... disturbing."
Before Broadmoor could respond, Rogers returned with Philip Pyke in tow. The blacksmith's broad frame seemed at odds with the garden's cultivated delicacy, his work-roughened hands and soot-stained sleeves belonging to a different world entirely from the carefully arranged flower beds and ornamental hedges. Yet his eyes, as they swept the scene before him, carried a sharpness that belied his tradesman's appearance.
"Constable," Pyke greeted him with a brief nod, then moved past to kneel where Broadmoor had knelt minutes before. His examination of the boot prints was thorough, calloused fingers tracing the air above the impressions without disturbing them, eyes narrowing as he noted details invisible to less trained observation.
"Interesting," he muttered, more to himself than to his audience. "These are London-made boots, Constable. Expensive work — you can tell by the stitching pattern here, and the quality of the sole." He pointed to a slight irregularity in one of the prints. "But look at this. There's a nick in the heel. Distinctive mark, that. The kind of thing a man wouldn't notice himself, but anyone who works with leather and metal would spot immediately."
Victoria had drifted closer during this examination, her silk skirts whispering against the damp grass. Her expression remained composed, but something in the set of her shoulders suggested heightened attention.
"How fortunate that we have such expertise at hand," she remarked, her tone suggesting she found it anything but fortunate. "Tell me, Mr Pyke — have you had occasion to repair such boots recently?"
The blacksmith straightened slowly, unfolding his frame with the deliberate care of a man who knew the value of making others wait. When he met Victoria's gaze, there was something in his expression that Broadmoor could not quite read — wariness, certainly, but something else beneath it. Recognition, perhaps. Or challenge.
"Can't say that I have, ma'am. Though if you're asking whether I recognise these prints..." He let the sentence hang unfinished, heavy with implications he did not choose to voice.
The tension in the garden seemed to thicken, pressing against Broadmoor's awareness like the gathering of storm clouds. He observed the silent exchange between Victoria and Pyke with growing interest — the way they studied each other, the careful positioning of their bodies, the things being said without words. There were currents here, running deep beneath the polished surface of colonial propriety, that he was only beginning to sense.
A crow's harsh cry shattered the moment, drawing all eyes skyward. Broadmoor glanced at the sky, noting how the afternoon had begun its slide toward dusk. The shadows in the garden had lengthened considerably since his arrival, the blood drops on the stone now darkened nearly to black, harder to distinguish against the winter-stained surface.
"Rogers," he called, "mark this area properly. I want a thorough examination at first light, when we can see clearly." He turned to Victoria, studying her carefully. "Miss Ashford, perhaps you'd be good enough to show me any boots in the household that might match these prints. For comparison." He paused, watching her reaction. "With Mrs Jeffries's permission, of course."
"Of course," Victoria echoed smoothly, though her gloved hands clasped together more tightly than the words warranted. "I'm sure Madelyn will cooperate fully with your investigation, Constable. Though I wonder..." She gestured to the garden around them, its careful order now thoroughly disrupted by the search. "How many more secrets will be uprooted along with these flowers?"
The question hung in the air between them, unanswered and perhaps unanswerable. Broadmoor closed his notebook with deliberate care, tucking it into his breast pocket where it rested against his heart like a talisman of truth.
"In my experience, Miss Ashford, gardens are rather like colonial society — what appears upon the surface often bears little resemblance to what lies beneath."
Victoria's eyes narrowed at this, but before she could frame a response, new shouts echoed from beyond the garden's boundary. The search party in the wooded area had found something.
"If you'll excuse me," Broadmoor said, already turning toward the commotion. He paused, glancing back at Victoria where she stood framed by the camellia hedge, her dark riding habit stark against the green of the winter garden. "Though I suspect our conversation about gardens — and secrets — is far from over."
He strode away without waiting for her reply, his mind already working through the implications of what the afternoon had revealed. The blood on the stones. The boot prints with their distinctive nick. The letter Mrs Harrington had mentioned — found here, in this very spot, and delivered to a mistress who had been "greatly upset" by its contents.
And Victoria's carefully orchestrated interruption, arriving at precisely the moment when the housekeeper had seemed ready to share something about Inspector Barwick's earlier investigation.
Behind him, the crow called once more from its perch upon the manor roof — a harsh, mocking sound that followed Broadmoor as he moved toward the tree line and whatever new discoveries awaited in the deepening shadows of the woods.
The garden had yielded its first secrets. But he suspected they were merely the surface layer of a mystery that ran far deeper than blood upon stone.
